Summertime Sponsorship

Summer is always a busy time for sponsorship activities, and Summer 2017 was no exception.

We believe that it’s vital to give local charities a helping hand and we do this as often as we can. After all, everyone in the local community benefits and that’s the real reward for us.

Special Mentions from Jan-Mar activities

The Charity Bike Ride: The Central South Island Charity Bike Ride covers 365 km’s of spectacular South Island countryside. The aim of the ride is to add to the $1,600,000 this event has already raised for local South Canterbury charities.

Barker’s provided spot prizes and fruit syrups for the drinks table, plus raffle items to help with this year’s fundraising. The following charities all benefited from this year’s bike ride:  Plunket, NZ Riding for the Disabled, Parkinson’s South Canterbury, YMCA South Canterbury, HeartKids South Canterbury, Family Works South Canterbury, Seniorcare Geraldine, and Hospice South Canterbury. The next ride will be held between 22-24 February 2018. Read here for more information on the bike ride.

Tai Tapu School Fair: Tai Tapu is one of the oldest primary schools in Canterbury, dating back to 1876. The school has a proud tradition of country education, combining the benefits of a rural position with all the opportunities of current educational practice. Local families are actively involved in the school through the PTA, parent help in the classes, sports assistance and cultural events.

Tai Tapu’s annual Pet’s Show in November is a great example of continuing the best of their long-standing traditions and is a wonderful community day. Children bring creative examples of baking, sewing, craft and flower arrangements as well as their pets. This year, Barker’s was delighted to provide product sponsorship at their school’s annual fair. You can find out more about Tai Tapu School.

Hilton Gapes Valley Sheep Dog Trial: We thought that this event was something a little different and it seems that our products were well received. This is what the organisers had to say: “Our dog trials at Waitangi weekend went very well and the sponsorship we received from you in the form of the lovely crate which we raffled, was very well received. About 200 people attended the event over the two days and we raised $200 from the raffle which helped our cause immensely. Given most the competitors are males, Barker’s product goes down a treat as the winner can take it home to the partner who has stayed at home running the farm!!”

We learned that there are usually 4 events at each trial: the Long Head, the Short Head and Yard, the Zig-Zag Huntaway and the Straight Huntaway events. Heading dogs (silent working dogs, evolved in NZ from border collies) compete in the heading events; and huntaways (evolved in NZ from border collies and various barking sheep dog breeds) compete in the huntaway events.
