A road trip to Golden Bay
Ahhh the joys of a Spring road trip; Golden Bay awaits!
We enjoyed a weekend in Golden Bay last weekend and a highlight for me was a visit to the Langford Store at Bainham, which is a 15 minute drive inland from Collingwood.
This lonely store in the middle of nowhere brings back memories of yesteryear when the storekeeper was the postmaster and community watch and stalwart of the local community and economy.
This store is an absolute gem. It reminded me of the days when we used to get our groceries delivered weekly by Morrison Bros, Geraldine’s own “department” store. It reminded me of buying a pound of something from Pyne Gould Guiness in Geraldine and watching it scooped out of the bag and filled into a paper bag which was then twirled around in the air to seal the bag. It reminded me of my roots in a quiet country town and how far the world has moved on. It’s well worth the drive to remember and absorb and have a delightful poke around their living museum.
Located on the way to the start of the Heaphy Track the store has been providing essentials to travellers since 1928. And the icing on the cake was to discover that they serve Barker’s jam on their home made scones with a cup of tea served in period bone china cups and saucers!
If you are ever up in Golden Bay and want to spend a night and enjoy a lovely dinner, I can thoroughly recommend the Sans Souci Inn on Pohara Beach. This adobe hideaway is what Golden Bay is all about …total immersion “without worries” in an ecological environment on 3 acres of lush gardens only a stroll from the beach.
