Dianne McDonald: Things just keep getting better!

Part of my win was a trip to Geraldine. It was amazing despite the rain! It was a busy day indeed but it wouldn’t be special without meeting the people behind the beautiful Barker’s products. It was such an honour to see the factory and inhale the fresh aroma of the fruit chutney they were making that day wafting over the whole of Geraldine.

The time with Annabelle White in our one-on-one foodie workshop was extraordinary. She is such an experienced foodie and gave me a great insight into the things I need to know in this industry. She was so generous with her foodie tips and I was able to ask a lot of questions that she kindly answered for me.

Then we called in to see the ladies at the shop for a quick ‘hello’ before dinner at the Barker’s home. We had a wonderful meal and it was so lovely to meet Michael and his wife Brigitte, who is an amazing cook.

As it happened, the next day Annabelle was due to be in Dunedin to appear on the Breakfast Show and I was due to be interviewed by Seven Sharp. After some local fare we drove back to Dunedin together which meant we were able to share a few extra hours to get to know each other more.

The filming of Seven Sharp was such an exciting day! It was fun and relaxed and Annabelle and the crew made it so easy. Lighting an open fire and to be able to cook on it again made me miss the Philippines but at the same time, made me realise how far I’ve come.

I baked my winning Baked Cod recipe in the oven and also a Spiced Chicken and Potato stew using Barker’s Spiced Eggplant chutney over the open fire. I was proud to show other people and share how I learnt to cook and where I came from.

This experience will never get old and will always guide me for the future of food blogging.

I’m really looking forward to creating recipes for Barker’s of Geraldine. Without the opportunity they gave me, it would be impossible to start and become what I am now.
