You’ll note that turmeric features often as an ingredient. Did you know turmeric has amazing health benefits? It contains curcumin which is a strong antioxidant and has powerful anti-inflammatory effects.
It is reported that while the ancient Greeks were aware of turmeric to make orange-yellow dyes, it didn’t catch on as a culinary or medicinal herb like it’s close relative ginger, for some time.
Turmeric is easy to find in powdered form in the spice aisle of your supermarket. If you are lucky enough to stumble upon the turmeric root, looking much like ginger, but with a definite orange flesh once cut open, experiment! It can leave a very rich stain on your cutting board and fingers (or clothes if you have the misfortune).
Turmeric root can be used as an alternative to ground and Dianne McDonald, our 2015 Recipe Developer winner, tells us that one thumb of turmeric root equals one teaspoon of ground powder.
Peel, wash and pound the turmeric root before adding to water and syrup (as in the case of our Winter Wellness Tea). Allow to boil for 3-5 minutes, then strain and garnish.
