We’ve just celebrated our 40th anniversary and to mark the occasion, our family business is updating its name to “Barker’s of Geraldine”. We believe this better acknowledges our New Zealand heritage and unique location, nestled at the base of the Southern Alps in the small, picturesque South Canterbury town of Geraldine, a far cry from an industrial park in suburbia.
Our Managing Director Michael Barker has proudly continued the traditions started by his father over 40 years ago: “While we have grown significantly, we have held true to the same values my father held dear – integrity, quality and innovation. Our new look reflects those values and our pride in remaining a family-owned New Zealand company.
Our business is still based on a corner of my parents’ farm and our offices have moved into the old family home (the family has since moved out!). We are the largest employer in Geraldine and the special family culture we work hard to nurture is a critical contributor to our success – this was highlighted at our recent staff 40th birthday celebrations where we recognised the long service of 41 employees who have been with us for 10 years and longer. Shirley Sheed, whose retirement was also announced, has been with Barker’s for 37 years, and it is wonderful that her two daughters are also employed in key roles in the business.
